The Ministry of economic development is tasked with formulation of economic and trade policies, the regulation of trade and investment in the areas other than tourism related investment, and the economic development of the country through regulation and promotion of trade and investment, and to provide labor and employment services to the foreign employees in the Maldives.

X-pat Online System (XPAT) was established on 26th November 2012 by Maldives Immigration (MI) and National Center for Information Technology (NCIT) under immigration act 1/2007 to enable easy access to services regarding expatriate worker in Maldives. Since this system is an online based system, customers can access the system from anywhere in the world.

This system consists of four main parts:

  1. Online Registration
  2. Quota
  3. Employment Approval (EA)
